How to spend less time in the kitchen
Cooking can be stressful and time consuming but the truth is eating homemade meals will always be healthier than eating out.
Here are tips to help you spend less time in the kitchen.
- Get the kitchen appliances you need; based on the meals you and your family enjoy regularly get appliances that cut down cooking time and save you stress – pressure pot, food processors, blenders….
- Cook in batches (especially meals you eat regularly) ,pack in smaller portions and save in the freezer
- Invest time in meal prep : make sure all the ingredients you need for a meal (or recipe) is ready ahead of time
- Plan ahead, take out time to plan your grocery shopping before leaving the house for the market / supermarket. Have a list of quick and easy to make recipes on hand and make sure you always have ingredients to make these recipes at home.
- Invest in bulk buying, make sure your pantry is well stocked with food ingredients you cook regularly.
- Clean as you go; dont let the dirty dishes pile up while cooking ,clean alongside cooking.
- During your meal Prep, try to prep extra ingredients and store for a later date – you can double or triple the amount you need per time- like chopping extra veggies for fried rice or stir fry spagetti and saving in the fridge or mixing a batch of dry ingredients for pancake and saving the extra for later.
- Organize your kitchen so you know where everything is and can easily reach for it, that way you don’t end up running round the kitchen looking for one thing or the other, that can be tiring and time consuming.
- Try one pot meals every now and then, they are easier and less stressful to prepare – yam/plantain pottage, bean porridge, stir fry spaghetti, yam peppersoup …..
